At some point in our lives, we all experience headache. There are many different kinds of Headache and to diagnose their origin requires careful history taking and expert management.  The distribution, pattern and triggers indicate the extent to which our musculoskeletal system is involved.  We will commonly ask patients to keep a headache diary to help recognise patterns.

What can contribute to developing Headaches?

There are a variety of ways are joints, muscles and nervous system can contribute to development of headaches such as:

  • Poor Posture
  • Overactive Neck and Jaw muscles
  • Altered neck and Jaw movement
  • Weak neck muscles
  • Stress

What can Physiotherapy do to help?

As Physiotherapists we can assess and treat tight muscles and joints in the neck and shoulder girdle that contribute to headache originating from the neck.  We can advise on exercsies to help manage your symptoms and advise on preventative measures (such as stress relief), to reduce incidence of headaches returning.  If the Jaw joints are involved in contributing to your pain, we may also liase with your dentist to discuss possible use of a brace to help reduce the strain on your Jaw muscles.

For some headaches such as migraine; where there may be no direct musculoskeletal cause, acupuncture has also been advised by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) as a preventative measure and to relieve symptoms. Their recommendations have stated that a course of 10 sessions over 5-8 week period may be beneficial.
